Week Four Assignments - Natural Lighting

Using a Natural Reflector

I may not be using a reflector correctly because I am not shooting the side of the leaves being lit by reflected light. Well...I'll have to look for other opportunities this week.

Meg is standing in the shade, facing a parking lot that is much brighter. The composition isn't the best, but it was the best for that location and since we were rushing off to an event, we didn't have time to look for a better location.

I exposed for Norah's face. The background is obviously overexposed but her darling face is perfect!

I really anticipated this assignment. One of my top goals with photography is to master natural lighting. However, I found myself rather frustrated this week. I did not have as much time to practice as I ideally wanted and when I did have the time, I had neither human subject or ideal lighting (v e r y overcast). The light was so beautiful Friday afternoon and I had found a number of great locations in a town I was visiting with Meg and 5 of her friends. But alas! They were occupied past dusk. I had mental images of 6 girls in formals at the old train station. What terrific images I would capture! So....here's the best I came up with.

  1. Love, LOVE the silhouette! My 15 year old said, "Wow, that is SO cool!" The lighting in the shot of your daughter gives her a beautiful glow. I hope that you CAN get those 6 girls in formals at the old train station sometime :)

  3. JoDean! These are great!

I love the low depth of field in your first shot. You'll have to explain more to me tonight about the reflected light so we can talk through it :)

Dramatic silhouette! what a great sky! If you want even more of the tree in the silhouette, try moving around to be able to place it more in the light part of the sky. (from the looks of the sky, it likely could have been a fast changing sky ready to storm again at any moment... )

Front Lit shot: LOVELY catch lights!!!!! What a great example of a fantastic way to find the light first, and position here towards the brighter light! It gives incredible catch lights, but provides nice even light on your subject. The only thing I would recommend here is composing the near merger at the left out--but you know that already :) Lovely depth of field.

Backlighting: YUM!!!!! I love this shot! Back lighting is my favorite of all lighting situations (well... tied with side lighting probably.) And personally, I love blowing out my backgrounds and exposing properly for the subjects. This is a fantastic shot! Full of energy, love the red shirt that makes her pop right out of the image! FABULOUS!

Side light: great little subject :) She too has some great catch lights in her eyes here. I love that she is looking off to the side. The light is just lovely. Good use of the depth of field as well to blur out more of the trees in the background.
